Key features of Full Hybrid Electric vehicles

Full hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions by combining an internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric motor. Here are some key features of full hybrid electric vehicles:

Hybrid Vehicle

  • Dual Power Sources :- Dual sources typically consists of IC engine and an Electric motor, IC engine typically runs on Fuel and can work independently or in conjunction with Electric motor. On other side Electric motor is powered by a high voltage Battery pack, it assists the engine during Acceleration and can power the vehicle on its own at low speeds or for short distances.
  • Battery Pack :- Stores energy to power the electric motor. This battery is rechargeable through regenerative braking and by the ICE during operation.
  • Regenerative Braking :- While braking we usually loss most of Kinetic energy, this regenerative Braking features helps us to cover that loss Kinetic energy by converting it into Electrical Energy to store in a battery pack.
  • Electric-Only Mode :- The vehicle can run solely on electric power for short distances or at low speeds, typically in city driving conditions. This reduces fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Start-Stop System :- Automatically shuts down the ICE when the vehicle is stopped (e.g., at traffic lights) and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This helps to save fuel and reduce emissions.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency :- By using the electric motor to assist the ICE and through regenerative braking, HEVs achieve better fuel efficiency compared to conventional vehicles..
  • Advanced Control System :- Manages the operation of the ICE, electric motor, battery, and regenerative braking system to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Self-Charging: HEVs do not require external charging infrastructure as the battery is charged through regenerative braking and the ICE, making them convenient for regions with limited EV charging stations
Some popular Examples for full hybrid Electric vehicles are Volvo XC90, Toyota Camry, Porsche Cayenne
